Feature ArticleUncovering Compassion: What gets in the way.
What happens when we realize that we have our own blind spots? Do we want to stay blind? Is there a curiosity about "seeing" clearly? When our awareness is clouded and dull, we are unconsciously reacting and being triggered in situations that become full of suffering and pain. At those times, we are so caught up in the pain we experience, we are not even aware of anything else. Thinking about what has just happened and what caused this mess is the farthest thing from our mind. We are caught up in a blind spot and it hurts. If we are going to feel better, we need to be open to a new perspective. A Question of Interest
Here's a quote from Norman Fischer, a meditation teacher, that helps me remember what really works when I find myself caught up in trying to change my husband or children (or anyone else!) I find it an extremely useful reminder. "You can't point out people's blind spots to them. If they weren't blind spots you could, but since they are blind spots they won't see them. So it's better to just be loving. When they are ready to see through the blind spot they will." |
